ABOUT THE RECORDING

In contrast to the hard swing and bop which have come to define his career, Another Christmas, finds Motley creating a landscape replete with nods to his Alabama – inspired musical influences. Three of four songs on this EP were co-written by Motley and his partner, Birmingham native and vocalist Veronica Motley. The disc opens with the title track, Another Christmas, a soulful, groove based tune whose optimistic lyrics are delivered with perfection by vocalist Cleveland Jones. The song becomes the ideal introduction to kick off the rest of the cleverly selected tracks. This is followed by a re-imagining of the classic Christmas favorite God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. This upbeat arrangement features powerhouse solos by Motley, trumpeter Melvin Jones, and former SOS Band drummer, Marcus Williams. December Dance (Redux) offers a glimpse of what happens when Motley infuses the blues into his own previously released work. The final song, The Gift, is Veronica Motley’s meditative, heartfelt, and delicate reminder of the reason for the season.
